Obverse description Fourfold quartered shield bearing the dynastic arms of Hungary: the Árpád stripes occupying the first and fourth quarters, the Bohemian lion passant in the second quarter, and the Hunyadi raven with ring in the third quarter. The shield is rendered in a simple, bold style characteristic of hammered medieval Hungarian coinage. No legend is present on this side.

Additional information

Matthias Corvinus overhauled the Hungarian monetary system in 1467, centralizing mint operations and suppressing the fractional issues that had proliferated under his predecessors. The obol, already a marginal denomination by this point, survived the reform but in drastically reduced quantities. ÉH#576 is among the scarcer products of that reorganization — output was curtailed almost immediately as the reformed system prioritized the denar as the practical unit of petty exchange.
