The cross extends nearly to the inner circle, dividing the field into four equal sections. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, reading + LVDOVICVS IMP., invoking the name and imperial title of Louis the Pious as a frozen dynastic attribution. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, consistent with hammered obol production of the 12th–13th century. The die workmanship is rough, reflecting the degraded copying characteristic of immobilized coinage. |
