The surrounding legend, beginning with a cross pattée, reads: K COM CART CIVIS, identifying Charles as count of the city of Chartres. The lettering is rendered in Gothic characters typical of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century French feudal issues, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The strike is irregular and partially off-flan, consistent with hammered billon coinage of this denomination and period. |
