| Obverse description | Carolingian royal monogram (Karolus cipher) occupying the entire field, formed by the interlaced letters K, R, L, and S in high relief against a flat ground. A plain cross is incorporated within the body of the monogram, dividing the design into four quadrants. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian epigraphic style with bold, angular strokes. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-hammered production of the period. No border or legend is present on this face. |

| Reverse description | A bold Latin cross with equal arms occupies the central field, set within a beaded inner circle. The mint name legend METVLLO, referring to the Melle mint, is arranged around the cross within the circular border. The lettering is in Carolingian majuscule script, preceded by a cross pattée as an introductory marker. The flan edges are irregular and show the characteristic undulating rim of a hammered obol. The overall design is typical of Carolingian monetary reform issues struck under Charles II (the Bald). |
