| Beschrijving voorzijde | Within a beaded inner circle, the Carolingian royal monogram of Charles — composed of interlaced letters in the distinctive Karolingus cipher — occupies the central field. The monogram is rendered in bold relief typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. Surrounding the beaded circle, a Latin legend reading GRATIA D-I REX ('Charles, king by the grace of God') is disposed around the periphery, introduced by a cross pattée. The overall design follows the standard Carolingian temple-type reformed coinage established by the Edict of Pîtres (864). |
