The four quadrants formed by the cross arms are left plain. The peripheral Latin legend REMIS CIVITA (in various die varieties also recorded as REMIS CIVITAI or REMIS CIVITAS), introduced by a cross pattée, identifies the Reims mint — one of the most important ecclesiastical minting centres of the Carolingian realm. The style is characteristic of the reformed Carolingian obol type introduced following the Edict of Pîtres. |
