Phokis held the guardianship of Delphi — and its considerable treasury — a fact that made the region a recurring military target. The First Sacred War had ended roughly a century earlier, but control of the sanctuary remained politically explosive. This obol circulates within the decade of the Second Sacred War, during which Sparta briefly transferred Delphic control to the Phokians themselves, only for Athens to reverse that arrangement shortly after. The federal coinage of Phokis is notably sparse precisely because the league's fortunes shifted so rapidly under external pressure from both major powers.
