Gargara was a minor Aeolian city on the southern slope of Mount Ida in the Troad, historically overshadowed by its more prominent neighbors and reportedly refounded with settlers from Milesians at some point in its early history. Its autonomous coinage is exceptionally rare — the city's output was limited, and few issuing authorities of this size in the Troad produced silver at this fractional weight with any consistency. Most surviving examples end up misattributed to larger regional mints before closer die study corrects the record.
