Beschrijving keerzijde A bunch of grapes with curling tendrils suspended from a horizontal vine stem occupies the central field. The ethnic abbreviation Λ and Ο appear to the left and right of the bunch respectively, identifying the issuing city of Lokroi Opuntii. An ivy leaf is placed in the lower left field, while a trident symbol appears in the lower right, serving as subsidiary control marks. The composition is characteristic of the civic types associated with Opuntian Lokrian silver coinage of the late Classical period.

Aanvullende informatie

Lokroi Opuntii sat uncomfortably close to the action at Chaironeia in 338 BC, where Philip II of Macedon ended Greek city-state autonomy in a single afternoon. The Opuntian Lokrians had fought on the losing side. That this small silver issue continued to be produced in the immediate aftermath suggests the mint — and the polis — survived the transition to Macedonian hegemony with its local coining authority intact, an outcome not guaranteed for defeated poleis of the period.
