Valentinian II was eleven years old when proclaimed Augustus in 375, elevated by his father Gratian's generals as a political counterweight before the boy could walk into a room and command it himself. The years 383–388 bracket his most turbulent period: Magnus Maximus had murdered Gratian in 383 and effectively confined Valentinian to Italy, leaving the young emperor issuing coinage from eastern mints under the protective shadow of Theodosius I. RIC IX 52b places this issue firmly at Constantinople, a mint controlled by Theodosian loyalists, not by the court of the nominal issuer.
