| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Emperor Valens, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, depicted in the conventional late Roman imperial style. The effigy presents the emperor in three-quarter view with military dress visible at the shoulder. The surrounding Latin legend reads D N VALEN-S P F AVG, identifying Valens as Our Lord and pious, successful Augustus. The portrait displays the characteristic stylised rendering of the Valentinianic period, with a row of pearls forming the diadem across the brow. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the emperor in full military attire striding to the right, head turned back to the left, holding an upright labarum (chi-rho standard) in his left hand while dragging a kneeling captive barbarian by the hair or wrist with his right hand. This GLORIA ROMANORVM type, emblematic of Valentinianic bronze coinage, conveys Roman martial dominance over foreign enemies. The field bears the officina mark O - F II, and the exergue carries the mint mark of Lugdunum. The surrounding legend is divided GLORIA RO-MANORVM, proclaiming the Glory of the Romans. |
