Joannes — a senior palace bureaucrat, not a military man — seized the western throne in 423 following the death of Honorius, holding it for roughly two years before Theodosius II dispatched an eastern army to remove him. His coinage is rare precisely because his regime never achieved stable control of the western mints; Ravenna was his primary base, and output was limited throughout.
He was captured in 425, paraded through Aquileia with a hand amputated, then executed in the circus at Rome.
