Gratian was elevated to co-emperor by his father Valentinian I in 367, aged around eight, making him one of the youngest emperors to receive the title. The SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE type was a workhorse reverse of the period, issued broadly across western mints to project stability during a reign that was anything but — Valentinian spent much of these years fighting the Alamanni on the Rhine frontier, with the court effectively managing the boy emperor's image from a distance.
The Thessalonica mint's output for this type falls under RIC IX #27c, distinguished by its specific officina marks.
