Anastasius inherited a coinage system in near-collapse — decades of debased small bronze had rendered the nummus almost valueless in daily transactions. His landmark reform of 498 AD introduced the large follis and its fractions, effectively rendering the nummus obsolete almost immediately. Thessalonica, one of the eastern empire's principal mints, would have struck pieces like this in the final years before that reform made the denomination redundant.
At 8 mm, this is among the smallest coins the Byzantine world ever produced in quantity.
