Jani Beg's reign over the Golden Horde coincided with the Black Death sweeping westward along Mongol trade routes — the very networks his khanate controlled. Khwarizm, as a major node on the Silk Road, was hit early and hard. Coinage from this mint in the years 1349–1353 was produced in the immediate aftermath of catastrophic population loss, which likely disrupted die-cutting and assaying practices across the region.

The multiple tassuj denomination in copper served fractional exchange needs at the local bazaar level. Zeno 9874 documents significant weight variation across specimens, consistent with a mint operating under stressed conditions rather than deliberate policy.
