The escutcheons are interspersed with six five-pointed stars, all executed in the bold, high-relief hammered style typical of early Portuguese medieval gold coinage. The entire central motif is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend in Gothic Latin script reads MONETA DOMINI SANCII, identifying the coin as the money of Lord Sancho.
