| Obverse description | Crowned facing bust of King Sancho II in high relief at center, depicted in a stylized Romanesque manner with draped robes and a cross-tipped scepter visible to the left. The king's face is rendered frontally with schematic features characteristic of 13th-century Portuguese hammered coinage. The central effigy is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by a peripheral legend in Gothic script reading REGIS POTVGALENSVM. The overall composition reflects the strong influence of Almoravid gold coinage traditions adapted to the Christian Portuguese monetary system. |
