Mithridates VI came to power after years of effective exile within his own kingdom — fearing assassination by his mother, who ruled as regent, he reportedly spent years living rough in the Pontic hinterland before returning to seize the throne around 120 BC. The Amaseia mint, seated in the steep gorge of the Iris River valley, served as a principal royal center before Sinope assumed greater administrative prominence. These bronzes were produced during the period of Mithridates' quiet consolidation, well before Rome recognized him as a serious threat.
The decades this issue spans coincide with his systematic absorption of Colchis, the Crimean Bosporan kingdom, and Lesser Armenia.
