(Translation: Valor wins over force. The canal from Haarlem to Leiden was begun on 26 September 1656, and the first boat was able to travel on 1 November 1657)
Reverse description The reverse features a central eleven-line Latin inscription in the field, commemorating the construction of the canal and naming the officials responsible. Surrounding the inscription is a wreath of oak leaves and acorns, interwoven with ribbons bearing the names of the four burgermeesters; small coats of arms are placed at the cardinal points of the wreath.
