Reverse description A plain Greek cross with four equal arms occupies the central field, with a small circular pellet or annulet placed in each of the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross. A small shield or ornamental device appears at the top of the cross. The circular Latin motto IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer') runs around the full periphery, separated from the inner design by a beaded border. The overall composition reflects the Counter-Reformation religious symbolism prevalent in Portuguese and Spanish Habsburg coinage of the period.
