Filipe I of Portugal was Felipe II of Spain — the same monarch whose Armada met disaster in 1588. The Portuguese "80 reis" denomination in silver was a direct product of the Iberian Union, which began in 1580 when Felipe pressed his dynastic claim following the death of the young King Sebastião at Alcácer Quibir and the brief reign of the Cardinal-King Henrique. Portuguese minting traditions were preserved under the union, but the monetary system was gradually harmonized toward Castilian standards throughout Filipe's reign.
