Himera had already been destroyed once — razed by Carthage in 408 BC as revenge for the Greek victory of 480 BC — and was re-founded as Thermai Himeraiai under Carthaginian auspices. These litrai were struck not by the original Himeran polis but by this successor settlement during the turbulent decade preceding Timoleon's reorganization of Sicilian Greek cities after 336 BC. The issuing authority sits in an awkward political space: culturally Greek, nominally under Carthaginian influence.
At roughly 0.61g, the litra was Sicily's indigenous silver unit, predating Attic weight standards on the island.
