Below an exergue line, the date of issue is inscribed. The surrounding legend DOMINE. ELIGISTI. LILIVM. TIBI. — meaning 'Lord, thou hast chosen the lily for thyself' — frames the composition and alludes to the divine favor of France as symbolized by the fleur-de-lis. The composition is elegantly balanced and exemplifies the refined medallic artistry introduced under Jean Warin's direction at the Paris Mint. |
