Abdülhamid I came to power in 1774 following the disastrous Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, which ended the Russo-Ottoman War and forced the empire to cede Crimea — its first significant territorial loss to a Christian power. This kurus was struck at the outset of that reign, a period when Ottoman silver coinage was in chronic debasement. Billon at this weight and diameter reflects not a deliberate policy choice but a treasury under sustained strain from military expenditure and eroding trade revenues.
