The Bishopric of Chur held temporal authority over a strategically fractious corner of the Graubünden, where competing claims from the Habsburg crown and the Drei Bünde made even minor ecclesiastical coinage a quiet assertion of jurisdictional independence. Joseph Benedict von Rost, who became bishop in 1728, operated within perpetual tension between Rome, Vienna, and the Reformed cantons surrounding him.
