Beschrijving keerzijde A double-headed Imperial eagle displayed at center within a circle, superimposed upon a large double cross whose four arms extend to the coin's edge, dividing the field into quadrants. The eagle bears the Habsburg imperial attributes and faces outward with wings spread. The surrounding legend, interrupted by the cross arms, carries the abbreviated titulature of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI along with the date 1740 distributed through the legend. A beaded border frames the entire design.

Aanvullende informatie

The Bishopric of Chur held temporal authority over a strategically fractious corner of the Graubünden, where competing claims from the Habsburg crown and the Drei Bünde made even minor ecclesiastical coinage a quiet assertion of jurisdictional independence. Joseph Benedict von Rost, who became bishop in 1728, operated within perpetual tension between Rome, Vienna, and the Reformed cantons surrounding him. This kreuzer belongs to a billon series that saw multiple dies across his episcopate, catalogued under the HMZ sequence distinguishing the subtle differences between issues.
