Obverse description Central device comprising a episcopal mitre surmounting crossed sword and crozier in saltire, with a trefoil or clover ornament at the base of the arms. The arrangement is rendered in the Gothic heraldic style typical of late 16th-century Swiss ecclesiastical coinage. The surrounding circular legend reads +HILTERBRANDVS+D·R·E·S, identifying the issuing bishop. The field is unadorned, with the crossed instruments serving as the principal charge.

Reverse description A plain cross with flared terminals, contained within a raised inner circle, divides the field into four equal quadrants. A small pellet or ornament appears at the centre of the cross. The surrounding legend, reading S+THEODOLVS+1594, invokes Saint Theodore, patron saint of the Valais, with the date of issue incorporated into the inscription. The border of the coin is irregular and characteristically uneven, consistent with hammered production technique.
