Kotys I ruled the Odrysian kingdom at its second peak of power, maintaining close ties with Athens while simultaneously extracting tribute from Greek coastal cities in Thrace. His reign ended with his murder in 359 BC, reportedly at a banquet, carried out by the comic poet Python of Ainos — an assassination that immediately fractured the kingdom among his sons.
The association with Cybele reflects deep Phrygian religious influence absorbed into Thracian elite culture by the fourth century.
