Additional information

Mikhail Romanov's accession in 1613 ended the catastrophic Time of Troubles — a decade of famine, civil war, and Polish occupation that had gutted the Russian monetary supply. These wire money kopecks, struck at Moscow in the years immediately following his election by the Zemsky Sobor, were among the first coins issued under the dynasty that would rule for three centuries. The МОСКВА mint mark on this type distinguishes it from contemporary Novgorod and Pskov production, all three mints operating simultaneously to meet demand after years of monetary disruption.
