Above the bull, a row of three vertical strokes or decorative elements appears within an inner circle. A marginal Arabic legend encircles the central device, reading the sultan's honorific titles. Iltutmish consolidated the Delhi Sultanate into a genuinely independent power after breaking from the Ghurid successor states, and his coinage reflects that ambition — he was the first Delhi sultan to receive a formal patent of sovereignty from the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad, in 1229, legitimizing his rule in the eyes of the broader Islamic world. The jital denomination itself was inherited from pre-Sultanate Indo-Muslim struck coinage, a pragmatic concession to local trade conventions rather than an ideological choice.
Billon composition varied considerably across his mint output, and fineness within this type can shift noticeably between die pairs.
