Iltutmish consolidated the Delhi Sultanate into a genuinely independent power after breaking from the Ghurid successor states, and his coinage reflects that ambition — he was the first Delhi sultan to receive a formal patent of sovereignty from the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad, in 1229, legitimizing his rule in the eyes of the broader Islamic world. The jital denomination itself was inherited from pre-Sultanate Indo-Muslim struck coinage, a pragmatic concession to local trade conventions rather than an ideological choice.
