The jefimok was not a purpose-struck coin but an administrative improvisation: in 1655, facing a shortage of silver for military expenditure during the war with Poland-Lithuania, the Russian treasury ordered foreign talers — primarily German, Dutch, and Scandinavian — to be countermarked and placed into circulation at a nominal value of 64 kopecks. The double punch applied to this example, a rectangular cartouche with the year and a mounted rider stamp, transformed a Saxon commercial coin into Russian currency overnight.
The experiment collapsed within a year. Russians refused the coins at face value, and the jefimok was officially withdrawn in 1659.
