A Russian countermark — the mounted horseman (Государев всадник) struck on behalf of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich — is applied in the field, authenticating the host thaler for circulation as a Jefimok. The encircling Latin legend reads: FRIDERIC ULRIC D.G. DUX BRUNSW, identifying the issuing duke. The overall die work reflects the sophisticated engraving tradition of the Brunswick ducal mint. |
