Irregular AE - George III with Tamar I

Tamar I did not rule alone when this coin was struck. Her father, George III, had crowned her co-ruler in 1178 specifically to neutralize opposition from the Georgian nobility, and coins bearing both names reflect that uneasy joint reign rather than any settled dynastic arrangement. George III died in 1184, ending the co-regency and leaving Tamar to become the first woman to rule Georgia in her own right — the only Georgian monarch ever to hold that title without a male co-issuer on the coinage.
