| 正面描述 | Two imperial figures standing facing within a dotted border on a scyphate (cup-shaped) flan: at left, the young Emperor John V Palaiologos crowned and robed in imperial loros, and at right, his mother the Empress-Regent Anna of Savoy similarly crowned and richly attired, both holding regalia. Above each figure appears a small bust of a saint or the Virgin offering crowns in the traditional Byzantine proskynesis investiture formula. The field is characteristically flat and worn, consistent with the heavily debased gold fabric of late Palaiologan coinage. |

| 背面描述 | Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing, nimbate and robed in imperial Byzantine vestments, raising His right hand in benediction and holding the Holy Gospels in His left. The throne is depicted with characteristic Palaiologan detail, and flanking the nimbus appear the abbreviated Greek inscription IC XC (Iesous Christos). The figure is enclosed within a beaded or dotted inner border, typical of late Byzantine hyperpyra, with the legend distributed vertically in the field on either side of the enthroned Christ. |

John V was crowned at age nine in 1341, immediately triggering a civil war between his regency — headed by his mother Anna of Savoy — and the usurper John VI Kantakouzenos that lasted until 1347. To fund the war, Anna pawned the Byzantine crown jewels to Venice in 1343, a transaction from which they were never recovered. The treasury was so depleted that the gold content of the hyperpyron had collapsed to levels unrecognizable from the coinage of even a century prior.
