Two pellets, serving as the denomination mark for the hexas (one-sixth of a litra), are placed symmetrically, one above and one below the central figure, in accordance with standard Siceliote bronze coinage practice. The field is otherwise plain, with no legend or additional devices. The type reflects the local cult of Krimisos, a Sicilian river deity associated with the territory of Eryx. |

Eryx sat atop a mountain in western Sicily, a stronghold whose control shifted repeatedly between Elymian, Carthaginian, and Greek hands. This bronze was struck during a period when Carthage was pressing hard into the island following its 409 BC sack of Selinus and Himera — the mint at Eryx operating under conditions of acute political instability, which likely explains the relative scarcity of well-preserved civic bronzes from this precise phase of the city's output.
