The "Kugelwange" — literally "ball cheek" — designation refers to a specific stylistic reduction that Celtic die-cutters applied as they progressively abstracted their Macedonian prototypes over successive generations of copying. By the third century BC, the original source type had been compressed and distorted to the point where individual facial features survive only as geometric conventions. Attribution to a specific tribe remains unresolved; the eastern European Celtic monetary sphere was fragmented among numerous small groups, none of whom left written records of their mint organization.
Göbl's typology places this hemidrachm within a sequence that helps trace the westward transmission of Philip II coinage influences into the Carpathian basin.
