| Obverse description | The hero Thessalos is depicted in three-quarter view to the right, wearing a petasos suspended on his back, with the two lower ends of his chlamys visible beneath his body. His torso is partially obscured by the forepart of a bull leaping to the right, around whose forehead Thessalos grips a restraining band with both hands in a taurokathapsia scene. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border, rendered in bold, archaic relief characteristic of Thessalian coinage of the mid-fifth century BC. |
