The serpent's scales are rendered with fine detail, its head rising above the coils at upper right. The Amphictyonic league ethnic ΑΜΦΙΚΤΙΟΝΩΝ is inscribed in Greek letters arranged in a semicircular fashion around the upper field, flanking the serpent on both sides. The overall composition powerfully evokes the Delphic sanctuary and its religious significance. |
