Methymna was the second city of Lesbos — politically and commercially distinct from Mytilene, with which it maintained an often antagonistic relationship throughout the Classical and early Hellenistic periods. The city's silver coinage is scarce relative to its larger neighbor, reflecting either a more restricted minting program or significant losses to circulation and melting.
