John III ruled Holland only because his elder brother William VI died without a male heir in 1417, triggering the Hoeken and Kabeljauwen factional conflict that had fractured Holland for decades. John's hold on the county was contested enough that his gold coinage served partly as a political instrument — asserting legitimate authority to an audience that included his own nobility as much as foreign merchants.
The Delmonte G#734 attribution places this squarely within the Rhenish gulden weight standard, which Holland adopted to facilitate trade with the German hinterland. John died in 1425, ending his line's direct claim.
