Frederik van Blankenheim held the see of Utrecht from 1393 to 1423, a tenure defined by constant friction with the city's burghers and repeated military entanglements with neighboring Guelders and Holland. His gulden coinage follows the Rhenish gold gulden standard that the major Rhine electoral archbishoprics had formalized by treaty in 1354 — Utrecht, never a member of the Rhenish Monetary Union, nonetheless pegged its issues to that weight standard as a matter of commercial necessity.
Delmonte's G#931 is among the scarcer episcopal gulden of the northern Low Countries, produced across nearly three decades of interrupted minting activity.
