The grosz koronny was introduced as part of Poniatowski's currency reform of 1766, itself driven by the catastrophic state of Polish coinage — decades of debasement had left the monetary system in near-total disorder. The reform, partly designed with input from the king's advisers and influenced by Enlightenment-era economic thinking, attempted to rationalize denominations and establish consistent copper coinage for everyday transactions.
The long date range across these Kop. references reflects ongoing production through the Partitions period, with Warsaw continuing to strike coins even as Polish sovereignty eroded. The mint ceased operations definitively after the Third Partition in 1795.
