Grosso - Peter of Campofregoso

Peter of Campofregoso seized the dogeship of Genoa in 1450 after years of factional violence between the Fregoso and Adorno families that had made the office almost revolving-door by mid-century. His eight-year tenure was unusually long by Genoese standards of the period, and the grosso issued under his authority circulated through a republic simultaneously fighting to retain Caffa and its Black Sea trading network against Ottoman pressure following the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
