Obverse description Central field depicts the gateway of Genoa (castello), shown as a turreted arch with an open doorway and a central boss, rendered in bold relief characteristic of medieval Genoese hammered coinage. The gateway is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding legend in uncial Latin script reading outward in the field between the beaded circle and the coin's irregular edge. The inscription invokes the name of Jesus and identifies Peter of Campofregoso as the twenty-sixth Doge of Genoa, with words separated by pellet stops.
