Lucca's grosso series issued in the name of Charles IV presents a peculiar historical wrinkle: Charles IV died in 1378, a full decade before this coin was struck. The republic continued invoking his imperial authority as a legal fiction long after his death, a practice rooted in Lucca's need to legitimize its coinage under imperial sanction without submitting to whatever emperor currently held the throne. By the late 14th century the city had learned, through repeated Pisan and Visconti occupations, that neutrality required careful political theater.
Bellesia's attribution LU#14 places this among the later grosso emissions, distinguished by subtle die characteristics documented in his 2000 monograph on Lucchese coinage.
