Obverse description The obverse bears the city name LVCA arranged in the form of a cross, with a floral ornament at the centre intersection, all set within a quatrefoil frame. A stylised lily occupies each of the four outer corners of the quatrefoil. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded or reeded inner circle. The surrounding legend, reading in Gothic-influenced uncial Latin characters, proclaims the imperial title of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor, as overlord of Lucca.
