The two horizontal bars of the cross are clearly differentiated in length, the upper bar being shorter than the lower. The peripheral legend in Gothic minuscule letters runs continuously between the inner and outer raised rims, separated by pellet stops. |

René I — René of Anjou, Duke of Bar and Lorraine, titular King of Naples, Jerusalem, and Aragon — spent much of his reign not governing but fighting, most notably the disastrous campaign to hold Naples that ended with his expulsion by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1442. His coinage from Bar continued to be struck throughout these absences under delegated authority, making the precise dating of individual dies within the 1431–1453 window genuinely difficult. Flon's attribution remains the standard reference, though Saulcy's earlier classification still surfaces in dealer descriptions.
