The shield, bearing the characteristic Lorraine arms, is rendered in high relief in the Gothic heraldic style typical of mid-14th century ducal coinage. The surrounding legend, separated from the central device by a beaded circle, reads IOhES DVX LOThOR ET mARC, identifying Duke John I of Lorraine and Marquis.
