Obverse description Central field depicts the stylized episcopal throne or châtel tournois motif surmounted by a cross pattée, flanked by the initials of Bishop Theobald of Bar. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which an elaborate outer border of Gothic foliage, fleurs-de-lis, and trefoils in high relief surrounds the composition. The legend THB EPISCOPUS, identifying Theobald as bishop, runs within the border. The overall style reflects the Tournois gros tradition adapted for the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, executed in the Gothic manner typical of early fourteenth-century ecclesiastical coinage.
